Swapping is the new shopping
On Friday 13 November 2017 Westside Housing ran a clothing swap at the Kilburn Community Centre.
This event was put on for COTA SA’s Zest Fest, and organised in collaboration with Northern Suburbs Housing Community tenants.
Clothes Swaps are fun and free community based events where you can bring:
– old clothes you no longer wear (but still in good condition),
– and would have otherwise donated to the op shop,
…to a clothes swap event and swap them for ‘new’ clothes that others have also donated.
We had 17 people participate in the clothes swap. More than half of all attendees had a low income or health care card. Over 35% were Westside, Northern Suburbs or other public/community housing tenants. We believe it was a great opportunity for our tenants and others in the local Kilburn community to participate in a ‘share economy’, build community connections, save money and get new things (which is always very exciting).
Although an official count was hard to gather, it is estimated that over 500 pieces of clothing was donated to the event with a whole Ute ‘tray’ full of excess items were donated to the Prospect Road Church of Christ Op Shop. The image to the right shows how happy the volunteers and pastor here were to receive such a large donation.
We also had 6 exceptional volunteers come and help us in the days leading up to the swap (receiving and sorting clothes) and on the morning of the swap. These volunteers are tenants of Westside, Northern Suburbs and Housing SA.
A big thank you for Monica, Ted, Geoff, Alan, Joyce and Jane.
If any Westside tenants would like to help organise and host a clothes swap in their local area, contact the Sustainable Communities Project Officer on 8155 6082 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Westside will work with your local community centre or other community space (ie, park, school) to host a clothes swap event close to you!
